Electricity is used as the main power source in fish and chip shops to power a whole range of equipment including lighting, fridges and freezers, microwaves, kettles, rumblers and chippers.
We all know electricity can be dangerous. If electrically powered equipment is used incorrectly or is faulty it can cause problems such as:
Electrocution, which can be fatal, caused by electrical faults such as damaged cables or faulty plugs
Electrical burns
Fires, caused by sparks causing the ignition of nearby items which catch fire
Where electricity is used it is essential the manager uses a competent electrician to install and maintain any electrical equipment. They will be able to advise on safe use of electrical appliances. This could involve:
Use of low voltage equipment if possible. This will reduce the effect should you get electrocuted.
Suitability of equipment according to the conditions
Use of Residual Current Devices, which cut off the power supply if there is a fault
Use of correct fuses and other safety devices such as safety cut outs
All electrical boxes should be waterproof
However, even given all this advice, it is still possible to create problems with using electrical equipment.
One of the main problems is the fact that water and electricity do not mix. It is essential you are very careful about having wet hands and touching any electrical equipment, or using water around areas there is electrical equipment, for example when cleaning.
If you are using portable appliances such as kettles or electric mixers you should always check the cable and plug before you use them to make sure they are not damaged. A competent electrician will check them regularly but the cables and plugs can easily get damaged in between times.
If you are using electrical equipment and the plug gets hot, stop using it and get it checked out, there is a problem with it, which could cause electric shock or fires.
Never overload electric sockets
Never attempt any electrical repairs. If there is a fault make sure everyone know not to use the equipment and get it checked and repaired by a competent electrician
If someone is electrocuted call for help immediately, do not be tempted to grab hold of the person. Switch off the power supply if it is safe for you to do so. This can be done using a piece of wood, or something else that does not conduct electricity. Once you are sure the person is not still being electrocuted you can put them in the recovery position until a first aider, doctor or ambulance arrives.
